Total E-Soft Software Review

Total E-Soft's graphics are okay, yet the software is aggravatingly slow. But that's not the worst part - they apparently have programmed into their software the ability to rig the games by flicking a virtual switch. In July of 2007 I downloaded their software to play for free. After analyzing the paytables they were using at the time, it was obvious that something was not right:

Game Return with Perfect Play
Single-Hand Multi-Hand
Aces and Eights 101.9068% 99.0926%
Aces and Faces 99.2555% 99.7597%

All American Poker 99.8648% 99.3756%

Deuces Wild 109.2685% N/A
Double Bonus Poker 102.2191% 99.1065%
Great British Poker 109.4648% 109.6033%
Jacks or Better 99.5439% 99.5439%
Joker Poker (Kings or Better) 105.8615% N/A
Mega Bonus Poker 94.2466% 94.2466%

No casino can possibly stay in business with fair games that return between 101% and 109%. Whenever I see paytables like this, I assume that either the casino has no intention of paying winners, or the games are rigged. It didn't take very many hands to figure out which scenario applied to Total E-Soft:

Great British Poker screenshot 1

In the above hand, I held the pair of Kings. I did not improve in any of the 50 hands. The chances of this happening in a fair game are 1 in 22,378,680.

In the hand above, I held the Four to a Flush. To win I would have needed a King, a Queen, or another Club to replace the discard. But all 50 hands were losers. The chances of this happening in a fair game are 1 in 222,532,774.

Jacks or Better screenshot

In the above hand I held the Jack of Hearts, and discarded the Two of Diamonds, Four of Spades, Six of Diamonds and Eight of Spades. Once again, all 50 hands were losers. The chances of this happening in a fair game are 1 in 858,036,650.

The combined odds of experiencing these outcomes for the three hands were 1 in 4,273,013,682,115,557,189,439,822 in a fair game. Clearly they were rigged. After announcing my findings in the Casinomeister forum Opens in a new window they were quick to work on damage control by lowering the paytables, fixing the games so that they dealt cards randomly, claiming that the high-return paytables were a "promotion", and blaming the rigged multi-hand video poker on an oversight.

Double-Up Game

With most online casino software, the double-up feature offers fair odds and therefore has no house edge. However, at Total E-Soft casinos, the double-up feature has a house edge of 5.8824%.

Two cards are dealt, one face-up and one face-down. The player must select whether the face-down card will be higher or lower than the face-up card. The house edge comes from what happens when both cards are of the same rank. In normal double-up games, the bet is a push if both cards match. But with Total E-Soft, the player loses if both cards match. In the long run, the player will experience a net loss of 312 out of every 5304 bets, resulting in the house edge of 312/5304 = 5.8824%. To put it another way, the player will only win back 94.1176% of the winnings that he tries to double. Assuming a player tries to double every win on Jacks or Better, the long-term return of the game is reduced from 99.5439% to 93.6884%.

And for some reason you are only allowed one chance to double, even if you win. Most double-up games allow you to keep doubling until you lose or reach the house limit, whether that limit is a specific amount of money or a specific number of successful doubles.
